ルサンチマンとは、行為による反撃が不可能なとき、単に想像上の復讐によってその埋め合わせをしようとする者が心に抱き続ける反復感情のことである。だが、ニーチェのルサンチマン概念の特徴は、それが価値転倒と結びつくところにある。手が届かなかった葡萄を狐が恨んだとしても、それはまだルサンチマンではない。酸っぱい葡萄だったのだ、と自分に言い聞かせたとしても、それはまだルサンチマンとはいえない。しかし、狐がもし、そもそも甘いものは健康によくないという思想を持ったとすれば、あるいは、甘いものを食べない生き方こそが本当の生き方なのだという価値を信じたとすれば、そのとき彼は、紛れもなくルサンチマンにとらわれたのである。
狐は価値を創造することなどできはしなかった。そうしないでは生きていけなくなったがゆえに、普遍的に存在する価値にすがりつき、それを異常に重視したにすぎない。彼が重視した価値は、原理的には誰もが知っている価値だったのだ。そうであればこそ、それは甘い葡萄を食べ続けている者たちに対する現実的に有効な報復たりえたのである。
ルサンチマンとは、反感と憎悪を愛と同情に転換する原動力であった。この機制の下では、憎むべき敵はそのまま「可哀そうな」人々に転化する。だから、その「愛」の本質は軽蔑なのだ。「敵を愛する」という倫理には、初発から復讐の倫理が宿っていた。「あなたがたを憎む者に親切を尽くし、誹謗する者に対して神の祝福を求め、侮辱する者のために祈れ。あなたの頬を打つ者にはもう一方の頬も差し出し、上着を奪う者には下着も拒むな。」（「ルカによる福音書」）問題は、何故もう一方の頬を差し出さずにはいられないのか、にある。反撃することができないなら、何故せめて打たれたまま立ち去るだけの力は持ちえないのか。何故、憎む者、誹謗する者、侮辱する者のために何もしないことはできないのか。それができないということの内に、自然過程としてのこの行動原理の成立の秘密があった。仏教は共同体の価値を単に無化するが、キリスト教はそれを敢えて転倒する。そこに両宗教の成熟度の違いがある、と少なくともニーチェは考えていたのだ。
